AI Tools in Schoolwork: Where They Help and Where They Quietly Hurt
Used one way, an AI assistant is a tutor available at midnight. Used another, it removes exactly the effort that produces learning.
AI writing and reasoning tools are now a permanent part of student life, and the debate about them is stuck between two unhelpful positions: ban them entirely, or treat them as harmless calculators.
Neither survives contact with what we know about how learning works.
The principle that decides everything
Learning comes from effortful retrieval and generation. If a tool performs the effortful part, the learning goes with it.
That single test resolves most cases. Ask what cognitive work the tool is doing. If it is the work the task was designed to produce, you have not saved time, you have skipped the lesson and kept the deadline.
Outsourcing the search is fine. Outsourcing the thinking is the whole problem.
Uses that help
- Explanation on demand. Ask for a concept explained three different ways, at different levels. This is genuinely useful and previously unavailable at 11pm.
- Generating practice questions. Ask for twenty questions on a topic without answers, then attempt them and check afterwards. The tool builds the test; you still sit it.
- Being the audience. Explain a topic to it in your own words and ask it to identify what you got wrong or left out. The explaining is done by you, which is where the value is.
- Feedback on structure. Write the essay yourself, then ask which paragraph fails to support the argument. You retain the thinking and get an editor.
- Vocabulary and language practice. Conversation practice in a foreign language is one of the clearest wins.
Uses that quietly hurt
- Generating the essay. Obvious, and also the least of it.
- Summarising a text you were meant to read. You get the content and lose the reading skill, which was the actual objective.
- Producing worked solutions to maths problems. Reading a solution feels like understanding and produces almost none. The struggle in the middle is the mechanism.
- Making your notes for you. Compression is comprehension. A summary you did not write teaches you nothing.
If you would not be able to answer a question about the work in a two-minute conversation with your teacher, the tool did the learning.
The accuracy issue
These systems produce fluent, confident text that is sometimes wrong. They invent citations, misstate dates, and make arithmetic errors while sounding certain. For anything factual, verify against a textbook or a reliable source. Fluency is not accuracy, and the confident tone is a property of the output format, not evidence of correctness.
Academic honesty
Rules vary enormously by school, exam board and university, and they are changing quickly. Assume you must check your institution's policy rather than infer it. Submitting generated work as your own is misconduct nearly everywhere, and detection is increasingly less relevant than the fact that you did not learn the material and the exam is still coming.
The honest bottom line
The students who will benefit are those who use these tools to increase the amount of thinking they do, by getting explanations faster and feedback sooner. The students who will suffer are those who use them to reduce it. Both groups will hand in similar-looking work this term. The exam hall will separate them.
