Nine Study Myths That Refuse to Die
Learning styles, background music, multitasking and the mysterious ten per cent of your brain. What the evidence actually says.
Education is unusually vulnerable to appealing ideas that turn out to be wrong. Once a claim reaches teacher training slides and parenting articles, it can outlive its evidence by decades.
Here are nine that persist, and what the research actually supports.
1. Learning styles
The claim: some people are visual learners, others auditory or kinaesthetic, and teaching should match.
The evidence: when tested directly, matching instruction to a stated preference does not improve learning. What matters is matching the format to the material. Geography needs maps for everyone; poetry needs to be heard by everyone.
2. You use ten per cent of your brain
Comfortable and completely false. Imaging shows activity throughout the brain across a day, and damage to almost any region causes deficits. There is no idle ninety per cent waiting to be unlocked by a course.
3. Music helps concentration
It depends entirely on the music and the task. Instrumental music at low volume is roughly neutral for many people during routine work. Music with lyrics reliably interferes with reading and writing, because language competes with language.
If you can quote the song afterwards, it was taking resources your essay needed.
4. Multitasking
Attention does not split, it switches, and every switch costs time and accuracy. Studies of students working with messaging open show longer study times and lower recall. The phone in the room, face down, still measurably degrades performance because part of your attention is committed to not checking it.
5. Highlighting makes material stick
Marking text is nearly passive and consistently underperforms in comparisons of study techniques. It also flatters: the yellow page looks worked on. If you highlight, do it on a second pass and then convert the marked lines into questions, which is where the value is.
6. Some people are just bad at maths
Baseline differences exist, but the vast majority of maths difficulty at school level traces to gaps in foundational content that were never repaired. A student who missed fractions in year five is not incapable of algebra; they are missing a prerequisite. Fix the prerequisite and the ceiling moves.
7. Cramming does not work at all
Cramming works for tomorrow and fails for the year. Massed practice produces respectable short-term performance and very poor durability. It is a legitimate emergency tool and a disastrous default.
Anyone who tells you cramming never works has not watched a student pass an exam on Thursday and remember nothing by June. Both halves of that sentence are true.
8. Silence is essential
Total silence suits some people and unsettles others. What is well supported is consistency and low variability: a steady, low-information background is fine, while unpredictable noise such as nearby conversation is genuinely disruptive because speech captures attention involuntarily.
9. Intelligence is fixed
Measured performance moves substantially with teaching quality, practice and expectation. Whether you call the underlying trait fixed is a philosophical argument; what matters for a student is that the achievable range is wide and largely determined by what happens next, not what happened already.
What survives scrutiny
The short list is boring and durable: retrieval practice, spacing, interleaving, worked examples for beginners, sleep, and getting feedback quickly enough to act on it. No app required.
