There is no single best note-taking system. There is a best system for a given type of lesson, and knowing which is which saves hours.

Match the method to the material rather than to a preference.

Every note-taking system has evangelists, and most of the arguments miss the point. Notes serve two different purposes, and systems differ mainly in which purpose they favour.

Purpose one is capture during the lesson. Purpose two is retrieval later. A system that captures beautifully and cannot be revised from has failed at the more important job.

Cornell

The page is divided into a wide right column for notes, a narrow left column for cues, and a summary strip at the bottom.

  • Best for: structured lectures with clear content, and anyone who wants revision built in.
  • Why it works: the cue column becomes self-testing material. Cover the notes, read the cues, recall.
  • Weakness: clumsy for maths and anything highly diagrammatic.

The summary strip is the part everyone skips and the part that does the most. Two sentences written from memory at the end of the lesson.

Outline

Nested headings and indentation. Simple, fast, universally understood.

  • Best for: hierarchical content, history, law, biology systems, anything with categories and subcategories.
  • Why it works: the indentation encodes the structure of the argument.
  • Weakness: poor at relationships that cut across the hierarchy, and easy to slip into transcription.

Mind mapping

Central concept, branches outward, connections drawn between branches.

  • Best for: revision consolidation and topics where connections matter more than sequence.
  • Why it works: forces you to decide what relates to what, which is a comprehension task.
  • Weakness: genuinely bad for live capture of dense material, because you cannot know the structure until the lesson ends.

Use it after the lesson, from memory, as a review tool rather than a capture tool.

Sketchnotes

Text combined with drawings, arrows, containers and icons.

  • Best for: processes, mechanisms, spatial content, and people who lose focus in pure text.
  • Why it works: dual coding. Combining visual and verbal representations improves recall, and this is one of the better-supported findings in the field.
  • Weakness: slow, and there is a real risk of the drawing becoming the activity.
Quick tip

Drawing a diagram from memory afterwards is a study technique. Making it pretty during the lesson is a craft project.

What matters more than the system

Three habits outperform any choice of format.

  1. Do not transcribe. Verbatim capture requires no comprehension and produces notes you have never processed. Force yourself to compress.
  2. Review within a day. Ten minutes spent tidying and questioning notes on the day dramatically improves what survives.
  3. Convert notes to questions. Whatever format you used, the revision-ready version is a set of questions. Do this once, early, and revision becomes retrieval instead of reading.
Key point

Notes are not the product. What is in your head at the end of the year is the product.

Typing versus handwriting

Handwriting is slower, which forces summarising and tends to produce better conceptual understanding. Typing captures more and understands less, but it is searchable and legible.

A reasonable compromise: handwrite in lessons where ideas matter, type where volume matters, and always convert either into questions afterwards.
